About the award:
In her capacity as Director General of the National Research Council Institute for Marine Dynamics, Dr. Mary Williams was a catalyst for innovation in Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond. She embodied the principles of applied research and partnership with the maritime industry. These principals are ingrained in the culture of the Marine Institute, an organization that Mary collaborated with often, with faculty and staff on arctic and oceans related projects and research. She was a review committee member integral in moving forward MI’s Master of Technology Management Program, a program that was first introduced to MI’s program offering in 2010.

2019 Turning the Tide – Innovation Leadership Award
Kraken was honoured to receive the Innovation Leadership Award in 2019.
Innovation is a key success factor in today’s competition world and it is extremely important to recognize such leadership in the marine industry. Firms that challenge the status quo to come up with a game-changing technology, a smarter work process, or even new markets deserve recognition. The recipient of this award is entrepreneurial, has taken on the risks and sacrifices that most often defines the road to a novel solution. Whether that innovation has solved an age-old problem, or opened up a completely new frontier, what is evident is that the winner of this award has pushed through a barrier to benefit their business and , in doing so , has raised the bar (and the ceiling) for the entire marine industry in this region.

2017 – Kraken Power GmbH – Dr. Ludwig Bölkow Technology Prize
On December 11, more than 100 guests participated at the national LUDWIG-BÖLKOW Technology Prize 2017. The award took place in the Rostock Chamber of Industry and Commerce for the 15th time, where two innovative companies from the fields of marine technology and mechanical engineering were sharing the prize of 10,000 €.
Kraken Power GmbH was awarded for its innovative drive and battery system for diving robots. The pressure-neutral systems can be used at sea depths of up to 6,000 metres. They use a new pressure-body and fluid-free technology for the use of mechanical, electrical and electronic underwater systems (underwater robots). They can be used for research purposes, but also for oil and gas production in the deep sea. The use of elastic materials, which encloses the incompressible components, has led to a significant cost reduction compared to pressure-resistant systems.
2017 – Kraken Robotik GmbH (Bremen) awarded Go-3D prize for SeaVision
Kraken Robotik GmbH was recently awarded the Go-3D prize for Kraken’s SeaVision™ system. The Go-3D award was established to recognize outstanding technical achievement in the field of 3D visualization. It was presented by the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research in association with BITKOM, the German Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media.
SeaVision™ is the world’s first full-color, 3D laser underwater imaging system. Equipped with a high-resolution camera and laser, the system allows users to reconstruct objects on the seabed in such a way that detailed models can be subsequently produced for 3D visualization.
Dr. Jakob Schwender, Managing Director of Kraken Robotik GmbH said, “We’re very honored to accept this award. Modern technologies for the acquisition, processing and visualization of 3D data have become an increasingly important issue for the design, production and operation of industrial projects. This applies in particular to the underwater maritime industry with its specific requirements for 3D reconstruction.”
The SeaVision™ system can perform a wide range of underwater inspection tasks with remarkable results. Its 3D imaging capabilities include generation of geo-registered “as-built” models of structures on the seabed or in the water column, survey of subsea infrastructure and comparison against baseline models and detection of structural defects or other out-of-spec conditions that exceed threshold values. When the SeaVision system is combined with an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, the resulting cost efficiency and accuracy of inspection will exceed anything available today.
